JAKIM Halal Pathway · The 20% Unlock
Rasaya is a plant-based metabolic-health bento. The product is, by ingredient, already halal-compatible. The gap is the cert — and the cert is the gate that opens the 20% Malay-Muslim metabolic-health audience (Persona X · Encik Rosli), the Gulf-state export pathway, and the trust signal that anchors the entire above-fold trust narrative. This artefact is the 8-week JAKIM application playbook, the ingredient audit, the product-line scrutiny, and the post-cert go-to-market.
Malaysia's adult diabetic prevalence has crossed 18.3% (NHMS 2023); among Malay-Muslim adults aged 40+, the rate is materially higher than the national mean. Rasaya's plant-based metabolic-health bento speaks directly to this audience — but cannot reach it without JAKIM cert. Below we show that (a) Rasaya manufactures in KL/PJ which makes it a Direct My Manufacturing applicant under the eHalal / MyHALAL portal; (b) the ingredient profile is largely halal-compatible already, requiring only supplier-cert verification and process audit; (c) the 8-week timeline is realistic; and (d) post-cert, the badge above-fold + Bahasa nutritionist + Putrajaya civil-servant cluster targeting opens an estimated RM 40-80K/mo additional MRR, with Gulf-state Lulu / Spinneys / Carrefour UAE as the secondary export upside through the UAE-JAKIM MOU.

NHMS 2023 puts national adult diabetes at 18.3%, hypertension at 30.0%, hypercholesterolaemia at 33.3%. Among Malay-Muslim adults 40+, NHMS sub-stratification shows diabetes prevalence of ~21-23% in this cohort — driven by carb-heavy nasi / kuih culture, sedentary civil-servant occupations, and high BMI prevalence.
Who they buy from today: Glucerna powder (Abbott, halal-certified), Resource Diabetic (Nestle, halal-certified), Caring Pharmacy diabetic-aisle products. No daily plant-based bento product is in the consideration set because no daily plant-based metabolic bento is JAKIM-certified.
The play: Rasaya becomes the first JAKIM-certified plant-based metabolic-health bento in Malaysia. First-mover trust signal in the segment. The Malay-Muslim adult-child caretaker buying for diabetic parent is a perfect mirror of the Filial-Caretaker (Persona A) we already serve — but with halal as the deal-breaker filter.

From Phase 1 ICP catalog (artefact 03) — Persona X is the Malay-Muslim mid-career civil servant, 48-58, Putrajaya / Cyberjaya / KLCC government-sector employment, BMI 28-32, pre-diabetic or T2 newly diagnosed, family history hypertension + stroke, monthly income RM 8-15K, EPF + GLC pension visibility, religious-observance-default with explicit halal-requirement on any food purchase.
Concentration: ~85K civil servants live within 20km of Putrajaya. Of those, conservatively 18-22% have metabolic-disease signal (matching NHMS 40+ Malay-Muslim band). That's 15-19K addressable metabolic patients in one geographic cluster — denser than any other MY ICP geo in the artefact 03 map.
The hook: "Bento penjaga kesihatan metabolik — direka oleh ahli pemakanan, disahkan Halal JAKIM" (Metabolic-health bento — nutritionist-designed, JAKIM Halal certified). Bahasa-nutritionist talking-head variant, Putrajaya geo-radius Meta + WhatsApp CTWA targeting.
The UAE Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology (MoIAT) signed an MOU with JAKIM in 2014 (renewed 2019, current) recognising JAKIM as an approved halal certification body for food imports into the UAE. This means a JAKIM-certified Rasaya carton can clear UAE customs as halal-confirmed without additional UAE Halal Authority review.
The Gulf market signal: UAE adult diabetes prevalence 16.4% (IDF Atlas 2023, projected to climb), Saudi 18.7%, Kuwait 22.5% — all Gulf states sit at or above MY's rate. Obesity rates are higher. Disposable income on premium health-food is materially higher. UAE expat-Malaysian community in Dubai (~28K) is a built-in pre-warmed buyer.
The play: JAKIM cert in Q4 2026 → soft Dubai expat marketing (Bahasa + EN) Q1 2027 → Carrefour / Lulu / Spinneys distributor pitch Q2 2027.

The Blacks Method 13 (Blacks-M13) landing-page floor framework specifies that food / supplement / metabolic-health pages MUST show certification badges in the trust-signal cluster, sized at 20-25% of above-fold visual real estate, before scroll. JAKIM halal is the highest-signal cert in MY for food trust — outranks "natural," "organic," even "nutritionist-designed" on Malay-Muslim conversion psychology.
What changes on the LP after cert: halal logo top-right of hero (sized to ~22% of trust cluster, alongside KKM food registration + nutritionist-credential mark). Static-image ads also gain the badge in same position. Static carousel slide 1 carries the badge. Trust-signal Recall test (artefact 12) should show +12-18pp recall lift for Malay-Muslim audience.
Within the KL/Selangor frozen-bento-for-metabolic-health competitive map (artefact 01), no operator is JAKIM-certified AND plant-based AND metabolic-positioned. Yolo Foods is JAKIM but not metabolic-positioned. Eat Clean Asia is metabolic-adjacent but not JAKIM-certified. Wise Crafters is mass-market not metabolic. Homey Food is medical-meal but not JAKIM.
The whitespace: Rasaya can plant a unique 4-way intersection — JAKIM × plant-based × metabolic-targeted × frozen-subscription. None of the six top competitors in the lane occupies this quadrant today. Cert-first-mover advantage compounds with the brand DNA depth Rasaya already has.
The single halal cert opens: (a) Malay-Muslim retail consumer (this artefact's primary thesis); (b) Gulf-state export (§7 below); (c) GLC corporate-wellness contracts (Petronas, Khazanah, Telekom HQ canteen pilots — halal is non-negotiable for any GLC food procurement); (d) KKM klinik-kesihatan referral channel (government-sector dietitians can only recommend halal-certified meals to Malay-Muslim patients); (e) mosque-network B2B referral via TCMA channels (§6 below).
One cert = five new pipelines. The 8-week investment compounds across the whole Rasaya distribution surface.
Rasaya manufactures in KL/PJ from its own dedicated kitchen — this places Rasaya in the Direct My Manufacturing applicant category (not Multi-National Industry, not Small & Medium Industry retail, not Food Premise / Restaurant). The applicable standard is MS 1500:2019 — Halal Food Production, Preparation, Handling and Storage — General Guidelines (Third Revision), with supply-chain references from MS 2400-1:2019.

Note · Real-world JAKIM timelines vary. The 8-week path is achievable for a clean plant-based applicant with prepared documentation. Animal-protein kitchens, multi-site applicants, or applicants with imported ingredients lacking FHCB-recognised foreign halal cert can stretch to 12-16 weeks. Rasaya's plant-only profile and single-kitchen footprint compresses the cycle.
Brown rice, hong mi (red rice), barley, oats, quinoa — all plant-source. Verify supplier halal cert if applicable (Padiberas / supplier with FHCB-recognised cert). For imported quinoa / barley, confirm no animal-derived processing aid was used in milling. Demand cert PDF from supplier on file.
PASS · baseline
Leafy greens, cruciferous (broccoli / cauliflower), root vegetables, beans (kidney / chickpea / lentil), herbs (parsley / cilantro / mint). Pure plant-derived — no halal concern. For frozen-vegetable supplier, confirm cold-chain freezer is not shared with non-halal meat operations (cross-contamination clause MS 1500 §5.4.2).
PASS · verify storage
Tofu / tempeh: typically halal-compatible. Verify supplier coagulant (calcium sulfate or magnesium chloride, both inorganic and halal — NOT animal-rennet). Seitan: wheat gluten extracted with water — halal-compatible. Plant-protein isolates: isolated soy / pea / brown-rice protein — verify the supplier did not use ethanol >0.5% as extraction solvent, and that anti-foaming / anti-caking agents are plant-derived (e.g., silicon dioxide, NOT magnesium-stearate-from-animal-tallow).
VERIFY · supplier-by-supplier
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapeseed (canola), sunflower, sesame, avocado, palm — all plant-derived. Confirm no animal-fat blending in supplier process. For specialty oils (MCT, refined coconut), demand cert. Avoid any "vegetable shortening" without supplier cert as historically these have contained animal-tallow.
PASS · verify specialty oils
This is where most plant-based products fail halal screening. Watch list:
(a) Soy sauce / kicap: fermentation by-products may contain residual ethanol >0.5%; demand cert. (b) Vinegar: rice-wine vinegar may have ethanol residue — prefer distilled / apple-cider vinegar with cert. (c) Flavour enhancers (MSG, yeast extract, hydrolysed-protein): demand source — yeast extract is OK if plant-origin; hydrolysed-vegetable-protein OK if soy/wheat-derived. (d) Stock cubes / bouillon: demand cert — many contain undeclared chicken extract. (e) Colourings: avoid cochineal / carmine (insect-derived, halal-doubtful by some scholars); use turmeric / paprika / spirulina. (f) Emulsifiers (E471 mono-diglycerides): demand plant-source cert — E471 is the most common animal-tallow trap.
VERIFY · cert PDF + lab test if uncertain
MS 1500:2019 requires that halal-certified production not share equipment with non-halal-certified production unless thorough cleaning (samak procedure if porcine contact, standard wash if non-porcine non-halal) is documented between runs. Rasaya operates a dedicated plant-based kitchen — no shared equipment with animal-protein operations — which is the cleanest possible audit position. Document the dedicated-line policy in the Halal Assurance Manual.
PASS · dedicated line
The CPET / PP / aluminium-foil trays Rasaya uses are food-grade plastics or aluminium — halal-compatible. Verify the supplier of trays + lids + outer cartons + ice-packs declares no animal-derived adhesives or coatings (some lower-tier suppliers use animal-glue on box seams). Demand cert from packaging supplier.
VERIFY · packaging supplier cert
Declare gluten (wheat / barley / oats unless certified GF-oats), soy, peanuts / tree-nuts, sesame, sulphites if used. This is a Food Regulation 1985 requirement (KKM, not JAKIM), but JAKIM auditors expect to see honest declared labels as part of overall integrity. Allergen declaration does not affect halal status — it improves consumer trust.
DECLARE · compliance bonus
Per Rasaya's canonical BRAND-DNA: Rasaya is FOOD. NOT consultation, NOT doctor-partnership, NOT personalized meal plans, NOT medical advice, NOT treatment program. The JAKIM cert covers the food and its manufacturing process — it does NOT confer permission to make medical claims. The product noun discipline (养生便当 / "metabolic-health bento" / "plant-based bento") remains intact post-cert.
What changes: the halal logo + cert # appears above-fold on LP and on every pack. The visual trust signal increases. The copy claim envelope does NOT widen.
POST-cert approved phrasing (continues from pre-cert):
✓ "Bento direka untuk pengurusan kesihatan metabolik" (designed for metabolic-health management)
✓ "Direka oleh ahli pemakanan untuk pesakit yang ingin menjaga gula darah" (nutritionist-designed for those wishing to manage blood sugar)
✓ "Bahan-bahan terpilih untuk kesihatan jantung" (selected ingredients for heart health)
✓ "Disahkan Halal JAKIM" (JAKIM Halal certified)
POST-cert FORBIDDEN phrasing (unchanged from pre-cert):
✗ "Merawat diabetes" (treats diabetes) — KKM violation
✗ "Mengubati kolesterol tinggi" (cures high cholesterol) — KKM violation
✗ "Menggantikan ubat" (replaces medication) — KKM violation
✗ "Pencegahan strok" (stroke prevention) — KKM violation
The Food Regulations 1985 (under Food Act 1983) administered by KKM (Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia) governs: nutrition labelling (Reg 18), claims (Reg 18B), allergen declaration (Reg 11), food additives (Reg 23), and prohibited claims (Reg 18A). This applies to ALL packaged food in MY regardless of halal status. Rasaya complies today; JAKIM cert does not add or relax this.
Nutrition label format: serve-size, energy (kJ/kcal), protein, total fat (sat fat), carbohydrate (sugars), sodium, dietary fibre — per 100g and per serve. Mandatory.
Continue surfacing the in-house registered nutritionist (Persatuan Pemakanan Malaysia / Nutrition Society of Malaysia) plainly on LP + above-the-fold trust cluster. Pair with the JAKIM logo. The combined visual = nutritionist + halal = the highest-trust signal stack available for a Malay-Muslim metabolic-meal consumer in MY today.
Recommended trust cluster layout: JAKIM halal logo (top-right hero · 22% trust zone) · MS 1500 cert number (small caption beneath) · Registered Nutritionist mark (PPM-approved cert mark · adjacent to halal) · KKM Food Manufacturing License #.
Per W1 of the WOT analysis (artefact 04), Rasaya cannot say "lowers HbA1c" but a customer testimonial CAN say "Uncle Chen's HbA1c went from 9.2 to 6.8 in 3 months." The halal cert does not change this. Continue building the testimonial library — now with an explicitly added Malay-Muslim testimonial track (Encik Rosli persona stories, post-launch). Aim 8-12 verified Malay-Muslim testimonials before Bahasa-track LP goes live.
JAKIM's official Halal Logo Guideline (most recent edition published on www.halal.gov.my) specifies: (a) minimum logo size 10mm × 10mm on pack; (b) must include cert number directly beneath; (c) cannot be modified, recoloured, embedded in other graphics, or paired with non-JAKIM "halal" claims; (d) must appear in JAKIM green or black; (e) cannot be used on products / sub-lines not certified. Violation = JAKIM warning, potential cert suspension.
Operational consequence: if Rasaya ever ships a non-certified sub-line (e.g., experimental SKU, B2B-only product), it must NOT carry the JAKIM logo. The brand-DNA "all-or-nothing" approach (certify ENTIRE menu) prevents this trap.
| Product line | SKU count | Halal-readiness assessment | Cert action | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-Meal plan RM 279.80 |
~10 rotating SKUs / cycle | Plant-based base — all 10 SKUs ingredient-compatible. Each rotation SKU must be individually listed in JAKIM application Schedule 1 with full ingredient declaration. Seasoning and sauce inputs are the audit-attention zone (per §3.5). | Each SKU declared individually | READY |
| 20-Meal plan RM 558.40 |
~20 rotating SKUs / cycle | Same ingredient pool as 10-meal — combines bento variants. The 20-meal larger box is heavier, more thermally fragile (W5 of WOT). Halal-wise, identical risk profile to 10-meal. Cert covers SKU list, not pack-size. | Pack-size variation listed under same SKUs | READY |
| 60-Meal Recovery-Phase Premium |
~25-30 SKUs in 12-wk plan | Recovery-phase SKUs include some convalescent-soft-foods, congee bases, herbal-infusion broths. Herbal-infusion bases need ingredient scrutiny — some traditional Chinese herb mixes contain undeclared animal-derived adjuvants (cordyceps cultured on animal-substrate, deer-derived powders). Audit each herbal supplier carefully. Recommend simplify herbal stack to strictly plant-source herbs only for halal launch. | Herbal SKUs require strict plant-only sourcing | VERIFY |
| Per-meal SKU rotation | ~50-70 unique recipes total over yearly menu | Every rotation must be JAKIM-listed and re-audited if ingredients change materially. JAKIM cert covers the SKUs declared at audit time. Adding a new rotation SKU mid-cert requires a Schedule 1 amendment (new product added to cert) — process takes 2-4 weeks. Plan rotation cycle so new SKUs are batched (quarterly Schedule 1 update vs ad-hoc). | Quarterly Schedule 1 amendment cycle | PROCESS |
| B2B / GLC corporate | Custom-spec'd boxes | Any B2B box assembled from already-certified SKUs is automatically covered. Custom-recipe SKUs (specifically developed for GLC contract, e.g. Petronas-themed metabolic-friendly bento) require Schedule 1 addition before launch. | Standard SKUs auto-covered | READY |
| Gulf-state export box | Subset of standard SKUs | JAKIM-certified SKUs flow through UAE-JAKIM MOU. Confirm UAE-specific allergen labelling (Arabic-language declaration may be required for retail). Otherwise no additional cert needed. | Arabic label add-on | UAE LABEL |
| Caretaker gift box (CNY / Ramadan) | Limited-ed seasonal SKU | Ramadan-special "berbuka puasa bento" + Mid-Autumn caretaker box become the festival cycle play (per §6.5 below + WOT O6). Each seasonal SKU = Schedule 1 amendment, plan 4-6 weeks lead time. | Seasonal Sch.1 amendment | PROCESS |
Per Blacks-M13 8-SIGNAL framework, the hero must show: (i) primary headline + value prop; (ii) trust badges cluster (JAKIM logo + Registered Nutritionist mark + KKM food license # + cert numbers); (iii) social-proof number (X+ customers / Y+ years); (iv) primary CTA. Halal logo size: 22% of trust-cluster visual real estate. Position: top-right of hero, mirrored on every page-tier.
Recommended hero copy (Bahasa track): "Bento untuk pengurusan kesihatan metabolik. Direka oleh ahli pemakanan. Disahkan Halal JAKIM." (Bento for metabolic-health management. Nutritionist-designed. JAKIM Halal certified.)
Rasaya already has CN + EN nutritionist-on-camera variants. Add a Bahasa-language Malay-Muslim nutritionist variant: Malay-Malaysian female ~30-45, smart-warm professional, hijab-wearing (optional but recommended for trust signal), generic role label "Ahli Pemakanan Rasaya." Same PAS-format explainer scripts as the CN/EN tracks, translated, with Malay-culturally relevant b-roll inserts (terawih-Ramadan-fasting metabolic narrative; nasi-lemak-portion-control narrative; hari-raya-balance narrative). Voice register = clinical-warm authority parallel to CN track.
Cost estimate: 8-12 hero-script videos (Bahasa) + 24-32 b-roll variants → RM 18-28K production budget for full Q4 2026 Bahasa launch library.
Persona X (Encik Rosli) is geographically concentrated. Launch Meta geo-radius targeting around Putrajaya / Cyberjaya within 20km, layered with employer-targeting on government-sector + GLC. Direct Bahasa-nutritionist creatives to WhatsApp Rasaya conversational funnel (existing inbox 74152 model). Open Meta cost-cap RM 80-120 CPL for first 60d, then optimise.
Conversion narrative: Bahasa-nutritionist talking-head 30s explainer → "trial pack RM 279.80 for 10-meal" CTA → WhatsApp Rasaya conversation handles delivery scheduling + dietary preferences (does the patient have any specific halal-stricter requirements e.g. avoid certain food-codes).
Malaysian mosques + Malay-community organisations (TCMA, JAKIM-affiliated Persatuan, surau networks) regularly distribute health-education materials. Position Rasaya as the "makanan untuk pesakit diabetis" recommendation in mosque-community health-screening events. Pilot 3-5 mosques in Klang Valley with permitted soft-pitch table at Friday-prayer health-screen days (KKM klinik-kesihatan run these regularly).
Referral economics: mosque-imam refers patient → patient calls Rasaya WhatsApp using mosque-code → mosque receives RM 30 community-fund contribution per first-month subscription (compliance: contribution must be community-fund, NOT personal — avoid religious-influence-payment concern).
Ramadan creates a paradoxical metabolic-health crisis for Malay-Muslim diabetics: 16-hr fasting + sahur+iftar carb-spike + traditional kuih + lemang during Eid = blood-glucose volatility. Diabetic Malay-Muslim adults receive doctor-counseling to "eat balanced" but lack a meal-tool to execute.
The Ramadan Rasaya pilot: "Bento Ramadan Sahur + Iftar" 28-day plan with portion-controlled metabolic-friendly sahur (slow-release carbs) + iftar (controlled-portion + fibre-loaded). Pre-order opens 30 days before Ramadan. Premium-priced limited-edition box. Halal-cert ESSENTIAL. Conservative target Y1: 500-800 subscribers (high LTV: many extend to permanent subscription).
KKM operates ~1,000+ klinik kesihatan + 150+ hospital dietetics depts nationwide. Government dietitians can only recommend halal-certified food to Malay-Muslim patients (operational rule). Pre-cert, Rasaya is invisible in this channel. Post-cert, Rasaya is the only JAKIM-certified plant-based metabolic-bento for them to recommend.
The play: direct outreach to KKM Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah dietitian networks Q4 2026 + Q1 2027. Free trial-pack distribution to dietitians for testing (RM 20-30 cost per pack × 200 dietitians = RM 4-6K seed budget). Expected channel: 1-3% of patients referred → conservative 60-100 new subscribers/mo by Q2 2027.
UAE Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology (MoIAT) accepts JAKIM as a Recognised Halal Certification Body under its 2014 MOU (renewed). A JAKIM-certified Rasaya carton clears UAE customs as halal-confirmed. No additional UAE Halal Authority audit required. Saves ~6-12 months and RM 80-150K of separate UAE-Halal cert application.
Operational sequence: JAKIM cert (W8 above) → MoIAT cross-recognition flow → UAE Food Safety Department product registration (~2-3 months) → UAE retail readiness. Total time-to-shelf in UAE: realistically 5-7 months post-JAKIM cert.
Frozen-meal sea-freight from Penang Port to UAE Jebel Ali Port takes 18-24 days via reefer-container shipping. Cost: ~RM 3-5/kg landed (estimate from 2026 reefer-container rates for halal/food category; subject to MISC + ONE + Hapag-Lloyd quotes). Typical 40-foot reefer ~RM 18-26K end-to-end, fits ~20,000kg = 1,200-1,800 cartons of 20-meal Rasaya boxes.
Margin implication: Rasaya gross-margin at MY-RRP RM 27.92/meal allows comfortable UAE landed-pricing at AED 32-38/meal (RM 38-45 equivalent), competitive with KCAL Wellness (AED 35-50/meal). Air-freight is 8-12x sea-freight cost — reserved for time-sensitive launch promo only.
Retail: (a) Carrefour UAE (200+ stores, halal-default, health-food aisle strong) — Majid Al Futtaim distribution. (b) Spinneys (60+ stores, premium-shopper-leaning, expat + Emirati mix) — Albwardy Investment. (c) Lulu Hypermarket (200+ stores Middle East, Indian-expat + South-Asian heavy, halal-default).
D2C: (d) Talabat (UAE's leading food-delivery platform) for frozen-pickup model. (e) Noon.com (Amazon-equivalent ME for online grocery + subscription).
Pitch priority: Lulu Hypermarket Y1 (best aisle fit + halal-default-positioning) → Spinneys Y2 (premium signal + expat-Malaysian community lock) → Carrefour Y3 (mass scale).
UAE diabetic-friendly meal competitors (Q1 2026 pricing snapshot from public websites): KCAL Wellness Healthy Living Diabetic AED 95-130/day; Right Bite Calorie-controlled AED 105-145/day; Slice Eatery Diabetic AED 88-115/day. Rasaya at AED 32-38/meal × 2 meals/day = AED 64-76/day positions as premium plant-based metabolic-bento at moderate price point — undercutting KCAL/Right Bite but premium-positioned vs Slice.
UAE narrative anchor: "Asia's first JAKIM-halal plant-based metabolic bento. Designed by Malaysian nutritionists for diabetes, cholesterol, heart recovery." The "Asia" frame + "halal-certified plant-based" + "metabolic-focused" is unoccupied in UAE shelf today.
Under Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011 (read with Trade Descriptions Act 2011), it is an offence to label, market, or imply that a food product is halal without a valid JAKIM (or recognised foreign body) cert. Penalty: fine up to RM 200K for company first offence, RM 500K subsequent, plus possible cert-suspension and criminal record for company directors.
Operational rule: NO halal logo, NO "halal" word, NO halal implication in copy, NO pre-launch marketing, NO Instagram-bio mention, until JAKIM cert is in hand and cert number assigned. "Pending JAKIM cert" is also unsafe — say nothing.
HARD REJECT · zero tolerance
Phrases like "halal-friendly," "muslim-friendly," "no pork no lard," "100% plant-based therefore halal" are NOT legally halal claims in MY. Some are politely tolerated by KKM in retail; others trigger Trade Descriptions Act enforcement. JAKIM cert is the ONLY valid halal claim. Until cert issued, Rasaya markets as "plant-based" (truthful, accurate, no halal-implication).
HARD REJECT
If Rasaya ever uses a third-party co-packer (e.g., for capsule supplements, ice-pack production, sauce-sachet packaging), that co-packer must itself be JAKIM-certified for the specific process. Repackaging non-halal-certified ingredients into halal-labelled Rasaya packaging = cert violation = immediate suspension + Trade Descriptions liability.
Operational rule: if a new co-packer is added, JAKIM Schedule 1 amendment required + co-packer's halal cert verified. No exceptions.
HARD REJECT
Plant-based does NOT auto-mean halal. Common porcine-derived processing-aid traps:
(a) Gelatin — bovine-source can be halal if certified; porcine-source is haram. Default reject any gelatin without cert. (b) Stearate / stearic-acid — can be plant (palm) or animal (porcine tallow). Demand source cert. (c) Glycerin / glycerol — same trap. Demand plant-source cert. (d) L-cysteine (flour-improver in some breads) — historically human-hair or porcine-hair derived. Demand plant or synthetic source. (e) Mono- and diglycerides (E471) — same trap as stearate. (f) Enzyme-cleaning agents in dairy / cheese substitutes — though Rasaya is plant-based, plant-cheese substitutes may use animal-rennet. Demand cert.
Every plant-based product Rasaya releases must run through this 6-trap checklist BEFORE supplier PO.
HARD REJECT
If Rasaya's kitchen, freezer, or transport vehicle ever shares space with non-halal product (e.g., third-party cold-chain provider also handles non-halal frozen meat), JAKIM auditor will flag this and require either dedicated equipment / vehicle OR documented samak-cleaning between runs (for porcine-contact, samak is mandatory; for non-porcine non-halal, thorough wash is acceptable IF documented in SOP). Rasaya currently operates a dedicated kitchen — protect this status. Avoid shared third-party cold-chain runs that mix with non-halal meat.
PROCESS GUARDRAIL
JAKIM auditors check all language variants. If the Bahasa label says "Bento direka untuk pesakit diabetis" (treat-implication) while the English label says "metabolic-health management" (compliant) — the Bahasa variant is the violation. Maintain a single source-of-truth claims-library, translate carefully, never let translator drift into stronger claims.
DOC-CONTROL
JAKIM halal cert is valid 2 years. Late renewal = cert lapse = immediate removal of halal logo from all marketing material until renewed. Set internal calendar reminder at month-21 of cert (3 months before expiry) to start renewal process. Renewal is shorter than first-issue cycle (3-5 weeks typical) but still requires fresh on-site audit.
CALENDAR GUARDRAIL
Avoid the trap of carrying JAKIM cert for the home market AND a separate non-JAKIM body (e.g., MUIS Singapore, IFANCA US) on the same packaging. Multiple cert logos on a single pack confuse the consumer and may violate JAKIM logo guidelines. For multi-market shipping, use market-specific packaging variants. UAE retains JAKIM via MoIAT MOU (no separate logo needed). Singapore is the rare case where MUIS may be added — handle as Y2 expansion.
